Here are the notes and logs relating to last year’s walk from Walsingham in North Norfolk to Santiago de Compostella. We called it the Cross and the Shell pilgrimage for a number of reasons. I will add explanations and background to this new Blog as I go but here is a short explanation of what this is all about...
All the way from Walsingham to Santiago I kept saying that I would not write a book about our walk, then I ended up wasting time starting to write the damn book I said I would not write! After several starts I have stopped. My ideas for the book either don’t work or won’t work as a book that anyone wants to publish and I have looked at self publishing.... ebook publishing won’t do what I want it to do so forget it!
In the end I decided not to write anything about the walk for a while and, hey presto, something happened to change my mind .....
Today I noticed that it was a year ago that Alison and I walked out of Vezelay with two very good friends of ours – Dugald and Betty - and I sent Betty a Facebook message to that effect.
That was my downfall. So, here I am at ten o clock in the evening putting together a new form of blog. I make no apologies for the rough and ready nature of this new venture. I only intend to spend a short time doing this each day and I want to keep the immediacy of the whole thing present for you.
Well, really, I want to keep it for myself, too. The problem with all of this is I would rather be doing it than writing about it – a serious confession from a compulsive and obsessive writer!!!
I will follow our walk for the next few months just adding a few pictures, a slightly edited version of Alison’s daily log and some comments/stories from me. I will also post a link to the route on Google maps which will have some of the places on “street view” too. I will try to keep this up every day and will ensure that, week by week, the story gets told – exactly one year on from the event. I will also build the story at the “front end” working my way back from Vezelay to our starting point in North Norfolk, England. By the end of July this blog will be the full account of our walk, or as full an account as I am prepared to give at the moment.
I will also tidy up and tart up this blog as I go along, so keep checking it out and be surprised!
So, here is the first entry for May the 3rd 2010.
well i think it is great and i am loving reading it. it sounds a bit cold and wet, but the scenery looks lovely and i look forward to reading how each place and the countryside changes as you go along. being me - :) - do you remember any more about the food and the markets and how what was readily available in markets changes as you go forward? or not, just a thought.
